In February 2008, a group of pupils and staff from Grove Park Business and Enterprise College, Itchen College and Sholing Junior School, Southampton went out to the Philippines to help change the lives of the hundreds of children who scratch a living from the infamous rubbish dumps in Manila, capital of the Philippines.
The team, working with Hedge End based Philippines Community Fund (PCF) construted a new playground at one fo the schools, painted another and ran sports activities for many of the children. In addition we were able to ship out a container full of much needed toys, clothes, tools, computers, stationary, plasterboard for the new school and other much needed supplies. Finally we were able to provide technical assistance with the construction of a new toilet block at one of the settlements where previously there were no proper facilities.
We are hoping to make a return visit to Manila in 2010 when the new PCF school is complete.
We were pleased to be sent a link to the youtube video below, showing the massive progress that the PCF have made towards building their new school since our visit in February 2008.
We are going back to the Philippines in February 2010 to build another playground, this time on the site of the new school.
